Semaglutide

Also known as Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus

FDA-approved drugMetabolic & weight

Once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management.

What people use it for

What Semaglutide does in the body

Mimics the gut hormone GLP-1. It increases glucose-dependent insulin release, reduces glucagon, slows stomach emptying and acts on appetite centres in the brain, which lowers hunger and food intake. A fatty-acid side chain lets it bind albumin, giving it a half-life of about a week.

Strength of evidence

Strong: multiple large randomized controlled trials (SUSTAIN, STEP, SELECT programs).
